SUSTAINABILITY
Celebrating creativity and culture on an island definitely has its drawbacks. Because as much as we are able to tackle the distances and logistics between countries,
we’re putting a heavy burden on our mother earth!
Without this marvelous spot on the western coast of Sardinia, Sa Terza Metari could not have grown to what it is to us today. And our hearts would break if we had to move away from there, if tomorrow, climate change had burned and washed it all away!
That is why we want to try to take more responsibility, making amends and reducing our carbon emissions wherever we can. Here is information and ideas on what we all can do to save the environment and enjoy Sardinia's beauty now AND in the future.
YOU CAN HELP US ON THIS JOURNEY !
THE PINETA
The pine forest
Sa Terza Metari is located in,
has not always been there. In fact, the area of
Is Arenas used to be the opposite:
The largest desert of Sardinia!
But as strong mistral winds kept sweeping masses of sand into the backlands, it was decided in the 1950s to take on the huge project of reforesting the desert with more than one million trees.
Today, only 70 years later,
there are pines as far as the eye can see
and even native species of plants and
animals have come back to the area.
THE DUNES
With the winds relentlessly
pushing water and sand inland, the
dunes form an essential physical barrier
that protects against the erosion of the beach
and the flooding of land and forest.
But dunes can only survive and stay in place, when they are colonised with grass and other durable plants. This vegetation forms a root system that is necessary to stabilise the sand masses and keep the dunes from wandering off towards inlands.
These plants have learned to live under sun,
wind and salt - but they do not survive
being trampled by humans!
MAINTAIN THE PINETA:
Keep the pineta clean and healthy,
remember to collect your cigarette buds
and
don’t start any open fires!
PRESERVE THE DUNES AND BEACH:
Please only use the existing pathways to get to the beach and do not walk into or sit inside the dunes’ vegetation!
Also, don’t collect any of the brown balls lying around on the beach - They are matted remains of Neptune grass, which provide the dunes vegetation with nutrients as they decompose.
What sustainable aspects we’re focussing on:
As we do not work with any investors and are financing the project merely out of our ticket sales while trying to keep prices low for everyone -
we feel that progress to lower our carbon footprint is slow and there definitely is still a lot of room for improvement!
Most of the wood we buy is grown in main Italy and transported to Sardinia through our local vendor. We’re trying to store and reuse as much material as possible, collect used items in Sardinia and upcycle them for decorations, while using new material for safely built constructions.
Tech supplies we’re mostly collecting and renting in Germany, which means a lot of transporting it back and forth for each event. We’re trying to find strategies to rent and store more material on the island - working with a low budget, this definitely is a challenge and we’re always on the lookout for sustainable and economic options.

BARS
We’re trying to reach out to local food producers, to offer you a fresh variety of Sardinian dishes, while we are increasingly limiting our food purchases from wholesalers.
In order to keep drinks prices low and still buy locally produced beverages, we will focus on slowly extending and replacing our drink menus with Sardinian brews.
At the same time, we want to reduce waste production at our bars - you can help up with this!

Do you have ideas on how we become better at upcycling and reducing our transport routes?
Do you know places or contacts in Sardinia that might provide us with tech and deco equipment?
We’re happy to hear about your ideas, tips, inventions or concerns!

In order to get greener faster, we need YOUR HELP !
Having almost 1500 people taking a plane to Sardinia is by far the biggest and worst impact on our environment, which we’re producing with the organisation of an island-based festival.
As much as we don’t want to swap Sardinia with another place, we all will have to find more sustainable ways to come together way down south!
Consider taking a little more time for your travels and get on a ROADTRIP with your friends instead of a flight! Like this, you could reduce your (and thus our) carbon emissions up to a THIRD!
Average carbon emissions per person (Berlin to STM):
flight ≈ 0,31 tons of CO₂
car + ferry (1 passenger) ≈ 0,72 tons of CO₂
car + ferry (3 passengers) ≈ 0,27 tons of CO₂
long-distance bus + ferry + train ≈ 0,1 tons CO₂

TRAVEL
Take some time before STM starts to take a trip to local marketplaces for your food supplies, instead large supermarkets.
Also, when buying food and drinks, be sure to buy products with less packaging material - there exists no ‘Pfand’-system in Italy!
To reduce waste at our bars, we will sell reusable shot glasses at the entrance. With buying one of these you can help us reduce plastic garbage production by a huge amount!
